How did you start your career in the music industry and what inspired you to create music in the genres of dance pop, funk and tropical house?

I started my career in the music industry a long time ago, having been fascinated by European electronic dance music since childhood. Inspired by producers such as Calvin Harris and Robin Schulz, I have always strived to create my own music. Already at an early age I showed an interest in writing melodies. In 2019, I tried creating a piece of music for the first time using Cubase 5. Although it sounded unprofessional, it was an important step in my development. Over time, as I refined my skills, I created a track called “Tiki” in the tropical saxophone house genre. It was in early 2021 when I switched to Ableton Live. The track was released on Dutch label ATLAST in March 2021, which was the beginning of my professional career. Separately I would like to mention the funk genre, which was a new direction for me. My sources of inspiration in this genre are Bakermat, James Brown and Bruno Mars. In March 2024, I released my first funk track “The Big Apple” inspired by the energy of New York City. I hope listeners enjoy this track, and the positive feedback, as well as the track's impressive stats, motivate me to keep going. I continue to develop in the genres of dance-pop and tropical house, saxophone house, striving to create music that resonates with a wide audience.

Which of your projects or tracks do you consider the most significant in your career and why?

I think that among the tracks and works that I have released so far, there are a few that stand out in particular. First of all I would like to highlight a track that has been gaining a lot of momentum lately - it's the track Costa Rica. This track was released in collaboration with Canadian saxophonist Karla Sax of British descent. This work has really allowed my account on platforms such as Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music to be promoted more actively. The work has over 5 million listens on various music services and also separately on Spotify already has over 4 million 800 thousand listens. So soon we will be able to say that this work has 5 million listens, and even only separately on Spotify. In addition to that I would like to highlight works such as my aforementioned track Tiki, which has over 7 million listens on Spotify and is definitely one of my calling cards, let's put it that way. In addition to that I would like to highlight my track Sensation, which was released in 2022. This track is very special for me, because it was the first time I made it to the official Spotify chart, to the New Music Friday Norway chart, to be recognized by Norwegian curators and to be included in the section of, let's say, hot new releases, which certainly helped me to grow my audience in Oslo and other Norwegian cities in general.

How do you assess the impact of your collaborations and collaborations with other musicians, on your musical development?

Collaborations with musicians from Europe and other parts of the world have greatly expanded my creative potential and allowed me to look at my work from a new perspective. I would especially like to emphasize the collaboration with the American saxophonist and DJ of French origin Natty Rico. He is impressive not only as a talented musician, but also as an experienced touring musician who knows what tracks are in demand on dance floors and concert venues. His advice has made our tracks very danceable and suitable for various venues in Europe and the US. This experience was extremely useful for me, I learned a lot and strengthened my skills. This is important for my future career, as I'm looking to develop not only as a music producer but also as a DJ.

What do you think makes your music unique and stand out from other artists in the dance music genre?

I hope that my music seems unique and memorable to listeners, although I prefer to be judged by an outsider. I try to harmonize acoustic elements such as saxophone, guitar and piano with electronic instruments. This creates a special sound that attracts listeners from different countries including the UK, USA, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

How do you plan to develop your career in the UK and what innovative methods are you going to use to do so?

After moving to the UK, I plan to actively collaborate with local producers, vocalists and artists, taking into account the musical tastes of the local audience. I intend to use innovative production methods and combine European and British music trends with my unique sound, complementing my compositions with acoustic elements. I am confident that this collaboration will help me to meet high standards and create music that is in demand in the UK and international markets.

What is the significance for you of being featured on Spotify's official 'New Music Friday Norway' chart, and how has it affected your career?

Of course, getting on the official Spotify New Music Friday Norway chart was a great achievement for me. I remember very well how happy I was when I realized that my work was now on the official Spotify chart, because it not only allowed me to believe in myself and make sure that what I was doing was right, but it also helped me to actively grow my audience from all over Norway, from cities as diverse as Bergen and Kristiansand and of course the capital of Norway, Oslo. I'm actively working on getting my work into the official music charts in the future, both in Norway and in other countries in Europe and certainly in the UK as well.

Tell us more about how you approach the process of writing music and what inspires you in the process.

As a rule, I start my pieces by writing a chord progression, and then I write the main melody and the rest of the piece, add various elements, write the arrangement directly and do the mixing after that. I would like to mention that my compositions are inspired by my own experiences, as well as my various emotions, feelings and experiences. I am also very inspired by traveling, different wonderful places and paradises of our wonderful planet - from Las Vegas and Los Angeles to Costa Rica and Monaco.

Do you have plans to expand your musical style or experiment with new genres? Do you plan to learn new instruments?

Yes, of course I plan to experiment with my sound in the future, because although I am very pleased to see my current sound attracting a lot of people on streaming services, I would like to improve it and I would like to try my hand at new music genres and directions, while still being true to my goals in terms of achieving a position in the world of music production and DJing. It should be noted that I would like to try myself in a variety of styles, both electronic dance music and modern pop music. I really hope that in the near future my first works in genres that are completely unfamiliar to me, but are in demand and popular in the world at the moment, will see the light of day.

What challenges have you encountered on your way to success in the music industry, and how did you overcome them? Who or what helped you in those moments?

On my way I faced different difficulties and challenges; first of all my difficulty was that in order to get a contract with a really big European company you have to meet very high standards and you have to strive for the highest quality realization of your ideas and your musical ideas, which certainly did not work out for me immediately. However, the belief in my own strength and the desire to really achieve something in the field that attracts me made me try again and again and helped me a lot, and of course I also often studied biographies of those people whose work and life path inspire me. This includes Calvin Harris and Robin Schulz, who I have already mentioned, as well as famous European music producers and DJs such as David Guetta and Don Diablo; who have had a very big influence on my work and whom I really admire.

Sergey, we know that you took part in competitions in the nomination “Composer. Electronic Music” with the work ‘One Day’ and it won the prize. We were interested to know more about how your work is perceived, that's why we asked British and Australian composer, singer, musician and singer-songwriter Dr. Roddy Knight, known as JD Days, for a comment. Below is his commentary:

JD Days noted that “the track is perfectly catchy, easy to listen to and has a positive narrative. The dance rhythm of the song and the use of brass instruments are tastefully done. This song is highly adaptable: it can be listened to at parties, in the office, at the gym or even at a wedding. It can both set the tone for a party and be a background for work. The song has a lot of potential and will be in demand in clubs.”

When asked about recommendations to the author or criticism of the composition, Dr. Roddy Knight said that in his opinion it was one of the best compositions in the competition. “'One Day' is a very adaptive and well balanced composition. It is a commercial yet unique song that can be listened to by a wide range of people without exception.”

Besides contests, how else do you get feedback on your music? Have you ever received negative feedback, and how do you deal with criticism? Does criticism become a reason to improve your music, or does it have a different meaning for you in the creative process?

I get different feedback on my music, but on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, there is no option to comment. Usually those who find me on social media and write reviews are friendly. There are few negative reviews, and while criticism is important for development, it's a small percentage. People have different musical tastes, and that's fine.

What dreams or projects would you like to realize in your music career in the coming years?

Currently my biggest goal for the near future is to reach 100 million listens to my tracks on a platform like Spotify, because at the moment I have about 50 million listens on that platform, 27 million 785 thousand of which are listens in the last 12 months. And I'm working very hard and actively working on increasing and improving those numbers, and actively trying to grow on other platforms as well.

A music career is a path full of challenges and opportunities, and our hero is not afraid to move forward, experimenting with new genres and expanding his horizons. His story is inspiring and proves that with perseverance and passion you can reach any heights. We will be looking forward to new musical masterpieces and successes on his creative path.
